Yoga Therapy

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Yoga therapy is the new buzz word in the yoga community, but what does this really mean to the people who are not aware? There is an influx of wonderful qualified healers that may fill the gap between the doctor, psychiatrist, and physical therapist. Yoga therapy is a burgeoning healing art and science within the great tradition of yoga in union with western medicine and anatomy knowledge. It is meant to focus on the specific needs of people who may not be able to go to a regular yoga class. The sessions are one on one so that a physical, emotional, and dietary assessment can be made to fit a treatment plan for the individual in need of this type of remedy. The most important thing to remember with the healing process is it is not a quick fix. Healing in the vernacular of the yoga therapist is about healing the whole person, not just fixing a chronic lower back pain or neck injury. The relationship between the client and the therapist has to be established so that an honest dialog can be made to get a clear picture of the problem at hand. This type of exchange may not happen at the doctor’s or physical therapist’s office. Yoga therapy may be used as a complimentary treatment program after talking to your local health professional.

Exploration of the different body parts can be an interesting game. If no one ever told you the name of your eye, what would you call it? Probably something related to how you view the world, especially objects in motion. If no one gave you a name for your lungs would you think that you only breathed out your nose and mouth? You’re probably asking what this has to do with movement? Exploration is a sensory experience, by taking the time to observe the moving parts of your body without naming, just simply being very present and aware of simple movement, we can understand the mechanics of thought. the fact that your brain associates sensations like pain with individual body parts shows that you have to name something to make an observation. the minute the observation is made the sensation changes immediately, observe this feeling from within. Watch it like you would watch your favorite movie or sports event. Why shouldn’t inner space be as fascinating if not more interesting than the outer world? Energy sensations can be harnessed and cultivated to heal the body. Low energy sensations can deplete the immune system if a person does not get enough sleep. The movement I am speaking about is the mind body dialogue. Understanding different cellular intelligence opens a whole world of new possibilities. Start learning the language of your cells.

Tuning in to the vibration of the cells of your body can be a fascinating and revealing exploration. By making time to have daily dates with your self; a person can learn so much about how the human body functions. Eating food is one way of determining how an external substance affects your system. If you pay very close attention to what your brain is telling you 5 to 20 minutes after digesting your meal. A person can immediately feel whether the food he or she ate was beneficial to your state of mind or make you crash and burn on the coach. Another way is to do gentle stretching like yoga or just plain raising your hands or feet in the air. By listening to the body’s immediate subtle responses, theoretically a person can recognize the beneficial release of oxygen to the parts of their anatomy that have been constricted from sitting all day looking at a monitor or television. Movement is medicine, oxygen rich blood make for healthy cells. Movement can replace most prescribed medications and it’s free. movement-as-medicine
